União Brasil made official this Wednesday (13) its support for federal deputy Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) in his candidacy for the election of the presidency of the Chamber of Deputies, next year. The announcement comes almost two weeks after the party confirmed and backed down due to resistance from federal deputy Elmar Nascimento (União-BA) to withdraw his candidacy.
The officialization took place in the middle of the afternoon at a meeting of the party leadership in which Elmar Nascimento asked Hugo Motta to listen carefully to the demands of parliamentarians and the party’s “ideas” — including the “proportionality for the occupation of positions at the table [diretora]”.
“You will have the unrestricted support of the entire União Brasil bench […] that, the only thing he will ask of you, is the opportunity for each person in the state he represents to be able to carry out his mandate in the best possible way”, he said, adding that “the party” will be the party best honored by the mandate of the future president” .
At the end of October, a meeting had confirmed support for Motta, according to deputy Paudernei Avelino (União-AM), who participated in the negotiations, told the press. However, shortly afterwards, Nascimento, together with the president of the party, Antônio Rueda, went public to say that they were still negotiating.
With the support of União Brasil, Hugo Motta managed to close an alliance with 17 parties, as Antônio Brito (PSD) confirmed the withdrawal of his candidacy earlier.
“The bench decided, with my proposal, to withdraw the candidacy for mayor, so that we can continue the process that is already taking place with the other leaders of the House and support Hugo Motta’s candidacy for president of the House”, said Brito.
In addition to União, the evangelical bench confirmed its support for him during a dinner on Tuesday night (12) in Brasília. Hugo Motta is also the candidate of the President of the Chamber himself, Arthur Lira (PP-AL), for succession.
Motta already has the support of his own party and also of the PP, PL, PT, PCdoB, PV, PRD, Rede, Solidariedade, Cidadania, PSDB, PSB, PDT, MDB and Podemos, in addition to União Brasil and PSD as of this Wednesday (13). The parties together total 488 parliamentarians, well above the 257 needed for Motta’s victory in the election.
Elmar Nascimento’s official exit from the dispute began to be planned soon after the PT announced its support for Motta, even though the opposition PL was in the same alliance. The Union deputy counted on the PT members due to Hugo Motta’s performance during the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) in 2016, in which he was one of the executioners.
Nascimento frequently pointed out Motta’s proximity to the former president of the Chamber, Eduardo Cunha, who forwarded the impeachment of the PT member to the Legislature, and argued that União Brasil voted with the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) on issues important, especially in the economic area.
“My candidacy is based on the renewal and strengthening of democracy, valuing diversity of thoughts. We are not looking for artificial consensus, but spaces for a healthy dispute of ideas”, he added.
