Tensions have continued in Amsterdam since the attacks on fans of the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv, which took place last Thursday night after a match with local club Ajax Amsterdam.
Dutch police detained dozens of pro-Palestinian demonstrators in Amsterdam on Wednesday, who again disobeyed the ban on protests imposed after last week’s violence against fans of an Israeli football club. TASR informs about it according to the agencies AFP and Reuters.
They resisted arrest, were taken to buses
Hundreds of protesters gathered on Dam Square in the center of Amsterdam. Several carried Palestinian flags and chanted slogans such as “Amsterdam says no to genocide” or “Free Palestine”. The police surrounded them, detained dozens of them and then took them away from the place in prepared buses. Some resisted arrest.
Tensions have continued in Amsterdam since the attacks on fans of the Israeli football club Maccabi Tel Aviv, which took place last Thursday night after a match with local club Ajax Amsterdam. According to the police, the attackers mobilized on social networks.
Between 20 and 30 people were injured in the attacks, most of them with minor injuries. Five people with more serious injuries were taken to hospitals, but they were released on Friday.
Tightening of security measures
Four of the 62 people detained during the violence are still in custody, including ten Israelis. The police are still looking for other attackers.
The mayor of Amsterdam, Femke Halsemová, ordered the tightening of security measures after the attacks. Protests were also banned until Thursday lunchtime. A demonstration similar to the one on Wednesday evening, however, took place in the city on Sunday, and riots and arrests also occurred on Monday evening in the Amsterdam-West neighborhood, which is mostly inhabited by immigrants, including Moroccans, who sympathize with the Palestinians.
