Most people have already left Kurachov. Russian forces also advanced in the direction of the city of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region.
Russia announced on Thursday that it had captured another village in eastern Ukraine. He is thus approaching the city of Kurachov, which is in danger of being encircled. He is also leading an offensive in the Kharkiv region, where he is advancing on the strategically important city of Kupiansk. TASR informs about it according to the agencies DPA and AFP.
Russia’s Defense Ministry said its troops captured the village of Voznesenka, north of Kurachov. It lies west of Donetsk and had a population of around 20,000 before the start of the full-scale Russian offensive. The city is largely destroyed and most of the people have left it.
The water level rises after dam damage
Russian troops currently control the territories in the north, east and south of the city, which lie on the banks of the Kurachovská water reservoir. Ukrainian officials warned on Monday that the Russians probably damaged the dam and that the water level in the rivers and streams around the city is rising. According to military bloggers, the tank has already lost half of its volume.
According to the US-based Institute for the Study of War (ISW), Russian forces control about 15 percent of the city’s territory, and the Ukrainian military has said there are a large number of clashes with Russian troops around it every day.
Russian forces also advanced in the direction of the city of Kupiansk in the Kharkiv region. The Ukrainian General Staff said that the Russian mechanized offensive using tanks and other combat vehicles in this direction has largely been stopped.
The Ukrainian army rejects Russian claims
Russian officials said on Thursday that they were gradually gaining positions in the suburbs of Kupiansk. This claim was later denied by the Ukrainian army, which claims that its troops control the entire territory of the city.
DPA reminds that Kupiansk is a strategically important city where there is a railway junction on the Oskiľ River. Russian forces captured the city shortly after launching a full-scale invasion in February 2022. They lost control of it in the summer during a Ukrainian counteroffensive.
