This Thursday, the detailed data so far on those who died in the flood was published, in a report from the Data Integration Center (CID), established to report on the effects of the dana on October 29.
Of the 216 fatalities already recorded, 131 were men, and 85 were women. The comparison with the population of the affected municipalities, according to data from the INE in 2023, shows that there were more deaths of men: they are 59% of the victims and 48% of the census population.
The other obvious pattern has to do with age: almost half of the deceased – 104 – were 70 years old or older, although that group represents only 15% of the population of the 28 municipalities where victims have been found. The case of nonagenarians is particularly dramatic. 7% of the dead were over 90 years old, although they are 1% of the population.
The age pattern is reversed with young people. Only 9% of the deceased are between 10 and 40 years old, despite being 34% in those locations.
The numbers of deaths by nationality are more in line with the distribution of Spaniards and foreigners registered in these municipalities. According to the CID count, there are 12% foreign victims, for a population of 11%. There are nine Romanian victims, four Moroccans, four Chinese, two British, and one deceased from Ecuador, Venezuela, Ukraine, the Netherlands, Tunisia, Colombia and Paraguay.
The data also indicates the most affected municipalities. A third of the fatalities have been found in Paiporta and Catarroja: 45 and 25 deaths, respectively. There are also 16 deaths in Valencia and its districts, 15 in Alfafar, 11 in Massanassa, 10 in Benetússer, Torrent and Picanya. However, caution should be exercised in these analyses, because the CID warns that the location assigned to the deceased is the place where the body was removed. If they died upstream, before being swept away, we do not know.
The CID is a technical body that is made up of a Forensic Office and an Office of the State Security Forces and Bodies, with specialized agents from the Civil Guard and the National Police. Its main function is to gather and supervise the different identification reports of people killed in events with multiple victims. This center is the only one authorized to publicly provide relative official figures to the media, through the Communication Office of the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community.
