Deputies speak of a “loss of opportunity” and say there are “strong signs” of “continuity of the anti-democratic acts” of January 8
Psol Deputies filed a request on Thursday (14.Nov.2024) in the Chamber of Deputies asking for the Amnesty PL (bill) to be archived. According to congressmen, the request was made because of those registered in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília, on Wednesday (Nov 13).
The application says “loss of opportunity”. It was signed by the deputies (Psol-SP), (Psol-RS), (Psol-SP), (Psol-RJ), (Psol-RJ) and (Psol-RJ). Here is it (PDF – 190 kB).
Initially, the text did not grant amnesty only to those arrested on January 8th, but to “everyone who has participated in demonstrations on highways, in front of military units or anywhere in the national territory” from October 30, 2022, the date on which the president (PT) won the 2nd round of the presidential elections against (PL).
The rapporteur of the proposal, deputy (União Brasil-SE), removed the section from the project. The pardon will now only be valid from January 8, 2023 until the date the law comes into force.
“The matter of PL 2,858 therefore deals with the clear and flagrant impunity of criminals who committed all types of atrocities under the pretext of exercising the right to free expression of thought, compromising safety, mobility, work and physical and psychological integrity of citizens and Brazilian citizens,” the application states.
He continues: “Regarding the incident that occurred yesterday [13.nov] in Praça dos Três Poderes, there is strong evidence that it constitutes a continuity of the acts undemocratic events that occurred on January 8, 2023.”
The president of the Chamber of Deputies (PP-AL) created, on October 28, a special group to deal with the matter. The measure delays the processing of the project, which was at the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission).
“The simple fact that it is kept in progress can, at any time and for up to 3 legislatures, lead to its being considered for consideration, which can generate serious risk and instability, becoming a true ‘free pass’ for the commission of crimes”, the application reads.
