The center and south of the country are expected to be particularly affected by strong hailstorms of hail, accompanied by thunderstorm, at least until SundayCivil Protection warned this Thursday, warning of the possibility of extreme wind phenomena.
Based on forecasts from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), Civil Protection issued a warning to the population according to which “greater potential for severity” is expected in the lower Alentejo and no Algarve.
The wind will blow from the east and will be more intense in the coastal strip south of Cape Carvoeiro and in the high areas of the Center and South.
In view of the forecasts, the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority warned of the possibility of flooding in urban areas, floods caused by the overflow of rivers and streams and landslides.
There is also the possibility of contamination of drinking water for “inert materials resulting from rural fires”.
The dragging onto the roads of loose objects, or the detachment of mobile or poorly fixed structures, due to strong wind can “cause accidents with vehicles in circulation” and pedestrians on public roads, the Authority specified in a statement.
Heavy rain floods roads, basements and stores
Em Albufeira e Olhão“the intense rainfall that fell in a short space of time, between 10:58 am and 11:18 am, resulted in a total of 13 occurrences”, according to the Algarve District Emergency and Civil Protection Command.
According to the same source, Albufeira was the municipality in the district of Faro where the highest number of incidents was recorded, of which five were on public roads, followed by Moncarapacho, but none of them were serious.
The reports that the rains were so heavy that flooded downtown Albufeira in just 5 minutes. It was long enough for streets and local establishments to be completely flooded:

There is a record of material damage but, at least for now, there are no victims or injured people to mourn.

The Civil Protection source said that “there is also a record of a roof falling in a warehouse in Silves, which collapsed due to the weight of the accumulated water, without causing any personal damage”.
The Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) placed the district of Faro on yellow warning until 3 pm, due to the forecast of showers, locally heavy, occasionally accompanied by thunderstorms. The warning remains in place for the period between 3am and 9pm on Friday, during which rain showers in the form of hail may occasionally occur.
The island of Madeira is also under yellow warning, due to rain, from 6pm this Thursday.
