The Federal Police (PF) intensifies investigations into the explosions that occurred in Praça dos Três Poderes, on Wednesday night (13). The main objective is to understand the motivations and actions of Francisco Wanderley Luiz, a locksmith from Rio do Sul (SC), identified as the person responsible for the attack.
Two explosions were recorded around 7:30 pm. According to the Federal District Civil Police bulletin, the first detonation was caused by an explosive that was in Wanderley’s backpack and was set off next to his body. The second explosion occurred on a nearby auxiliary road, where a vehicle was parked, but the circumstances are still being investigated.
Statements collected by the PF from the accused’s family indicate that he had strong political convictions, planned the attack in detail and had specific targets. According to reports released by G1a former companion of Wanderley told the PF that, since 2022, he had expressed his intention to “eliminate the STF ministers”. She also revealed that he even stayed in Brasília that year to “observe the movement”.
Wanderley’s main target would be Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). “I wanted to kill him and whoever else was with him at the time of the attack”, declared the ex-partner to the PF agents.
Andrei Rodrigues, general director of the PF, confirmed that there is evidence of Wanderley’s frequent movements between Rio do Sul and Brasília in 2023 and 2024. The police authority classified the explosions as an “individual act”, but also highlighted the presence of evidence that point to the possible influence of “active extremist groups” behind the episode.
“The action, in fact, was individual, but the investigation will tell if there are connections, networks, what was behind and drove this action”, stated Rodrigues,
The investigation also seeks to determine whether Wanderley had financial support or received incentives from third parties in Brasília. According to information from the newspaper The Globethis hypothesis is being analyzed.
Wanderley’s son also testified to the Federal Police
Another statement was given by Wanderley’s son, who reported having received a farewell message from his father in his cell phone’s voicemail. He stated that he initially did not pay attention to the content, but that, after the attack, he understood its meaning.
Despite this, the son described Wanderley as someone with “not very radical” political beliefs and a modest income, with monthly earnings of approximately R$5,000.
Currently, the PF is carrying out inspections on Wanderley’s electronic devices to deepen investigations and clarify possible connections with extremist groups or other people involved.
