The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, assesses that the Amnesty PL loses strength after the attack that occurred on Wednesday night (13) in Praça dos Três Poderes, in Brasília.
“I think that whoever defends this is in an even more difficult situation to make this defense because the importance of having investigation and vehement punishment becomes increasingly clear, respecting the entire democratic process, legal process and the right to defense”, he commented in interview with CNN Behind the Scenes (Monday to Friday, 12pm).
The bill provides for a pardon for those investigated for the attacks of January 8, 2023. It was even considered by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ) of the Chamber, but, by decision of the president of the House, Arthur Lira (PP-AL ), a special commission was created to discuss the proposal.
Padilha points out that, if there is no accountability for the crimes committed on January 8, “people will begin to feel comfortable committing crimes like these”.
The minister also highlighted the importance of Brazilian society remaining alert to extreme acts like this. “We don’t want that. We do not want to see people dying encouraged by a culture of hate, by a perverted practice of politics that is symbolized by this extreme right. We don’t want to see people dying, their family and friends suffering from it and institutions also suffering from it”, he stressed.
