who planned and carried out an attack in Praça dos Três Poderes on Wednesday (13), was a good man, centered, happy and very humanistic. At least that’s how his brothers saw him. But Sônia, Maria Irlete and Rogério recognize that Tiu França, as he was known, had changed his behavior a lot in the last year.
The man who blew himself up and detonated the car last Wednesday (13) was already a candidate for councilor for the em and was before the (Federal Supreme Court) in August. A locksmith, he contested the 2020 election under the name Tiü França, in Rio do Sul (SC), but was not elected.
Before he died, he published a series of messages about the attack, mixing political and religious statements.
Maria Irlete says she doesn’t understand how her brother changed so much, to the point of doing what he did. “He was always irreverent, a good critic, very humanist, wanting the good for everyone”, she said to Sheet.
“I don’t know when it happened. Especially if it’s family: you live together and don’t know when the change happens. He was walking around a lot.”
One of his trips was to the Bolsonarista camp in , in front of the Army HQ, where the group that carried out the coup attack on January 8, 2023 left, according to his brother Rogério Luiz.
He does not know, however, whether Tiu França was in the capital on the day of the fateful invasion of Congress, the Planalto Palace.
“I don’t think so. He was there, but I think it was before or after. He didn’t have a sequence of journeys through these places”, he says.
Francisco and his brother used to be very close, but they have grown apart in recent times. Much because of a different worldview. In several posts on social media, the author of the attack demonstrated alignment with inflammatory speeches by the extreme right
Rogério says he didn’t have that violent profile, he was polite, “but time perhaps contaminated his head”, according to his brother. “Over a year ago, he became very different from what he was, so much so that I tell you that I don’t recognize the person who exploded there as my brother. There was another person there, upset”, he told Sheet Rogério Luiz, who is a forestry engineer.
“He was very friendly, he was charismatic, intelligent, but I could no longer interact with him, because my line of reasoning was one and his was another”, says Rogério, who tries to understand what transformed his brother.
“These are pieces that accumulate in a person’s head, but we were astonished to have arrived at this. The person feeds something, tends to do something, and what happened happened. The person who was there [na praça] It wasn’t Tiu França, he changed a lot. Before, he was a polite, kind person who worked”, continues Rogério.
Sônia, who lives in Paraná and therefore only had contact with her brother via the internet, says that he had been traveling a lot. “I knew that he was like most Brazilians, expecting change in Brazil, which anyone has, I have, you have, but I didn’t know about being a fanatic. In fact, I didn’t even know that he had been a candidate to councilman.”
To the Federal Police, a former companion of the author, called Daiane, said that he wanted to target the STF minister. Rogério, the brother, says he doesn’t trust the information from his ex-sister-in-law, with whom Tiu França was broken up.
“If he thought that way, no one in the family was aware of it. If she knew about it, she should have mentioned it to the courts, saying: ‘Let’s avoid it, let’s warn about what could happen’, and she didn’t do that”, he says Rogério.
“That’s why I think it’s untrue. I’m also not going to say that he didn’t speak, he didn’t insinuate, as many people insinuated or said, because Alexandre de Moraes is very targeted. But that wasn’t the case with him. He didn’t have that profile, of being violent. It’s very strange to me that he had these artifacts, that he did something premeditated.”
Despite this, Francisco had been convicted and arrested for being a domestic worker in 2014 in a process that is under judicial secrecy. The victim was Daiane, with whom the locksmith had an on-and-off, but lasting, relationship – so much so that he acted like the father of a stepson.
The attack occurred on December 15, 2012 and Tiu França was arrested on the same day and released on bail. Sentenced to three months in semi-open prison, he did not appeal and served the sentence from April 1, 2014 to June 30 of the same year.
