The newly elected US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he has nominated Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for the post of Secretary of Health and Human Resources. informs TASR according to the Reuters agency.
According to Reuters, environmental activist and conspiracy theorist Kennedy spread misinformation about vaccines and in this year’s US presidential elections, he ran for election as an independent candidate until August, when he gave up his candidacy in favor of Trump – in exchange for a post in the future Republican administration.
“Americans have been crushed for too long by the industrial food complex and pharmaceutical companies that have engaged in lies and misinformation when it comes to public health,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform when announcing the nomination.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services oversees the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, the National Institutes of Health, and the vast Medicare and Medicaid Services programs that provide health insurance for the poor, people age 65 and older, and the disabled inhabitants.
“He’s going to help make America healthy again,” Trump said in his victory speech the day after the election, on November 6. “He wants to do some things, and we’ll let him do it,” he added.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is the nephew of the assassinated democratic American president John F. Kennedy. His father, Robert Kennedy, was the attorney general in his brother’s administration and was also killed in the assassination.
