The executive secretary of Public Security of the Federal District, Alexandre Patury, confirmed this Thursday (14) the reinforcement of patrolling in the central region of Brasília after the explosions in Praça dos Três Poderes, which resulted in the death of a man.
During a meeting with ministers Roberto Barroso and Alexandre de Moraes, from the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Patury stated that, despite the incident, the Esplanada dos Ministérios remains the “safest place” in the country. One of the measures adopted immediately was the replacement of protective fences around the STF headquarters, a recommendation from the Court’s own security team.
Patury explained that, although the measure may seem “unfriendly” to visitors to Brasília, it is necessary while technological alternatives are evaluated, such as facial recognition, autonomous drones and data sharing. “It is an appropriate measure at this time to protect the security of institutions”, he highlighted.
The reinforcement of policing was a decision by the interim governor, Celina Leão, to strengthen the “sense of security” of citizens and visitors in the central region of Brasília. Patury also minimized what happened, calling it a “sporadic situation”, and stated that incidents on the Esplanada are rare compared to other countries.
“The idea that it is an unsafe place is a fallacy,” he said, remembering that each institution in Praça dos Três Poderes has its own police and that overt patrolling remains strong. Patury reinforced that security is a continuous priority and that new improvements are constantly evaluated to preserve the country’s political center.
Images from a STF security circuit camera showed the action of Francisco Wanderley Luiz, 59 years old. He detonated explosives against the Court building, in Praça dos Três Poderes, this Wednesday (13), around 7:30 pm, and then killed himself by lying on top of one of the artifacts.
