The rain is not letting up, especially in Baixo Alentejo and Algarve. O Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) has already extended the orange warning until 3am this Saturday and warns that yesterday’s floods could repeat again throughout the night.
During this Friday afternoon, the scenario was repeated throughout the Algarve. Albufeira, Olhão, Monte Gordo found themselves faced with sudden rains, which quickly turned into floods. The population speaks of a recurring situation which, despite being unpredictable, could have been prevented.
Em Alagoa, in Altura, region built below sea level, most houses were affected. Antônio speaks in a vicious cycle that only ends when the rain passes.
“Fortunately there is a sewage pump in the basement that removes the water as it enters, but as there is no way out either, it ends up going through the door, going out into the sewer and coming back in”, he tells SIC.
O extended the orange warning for rain and thunder until 3:00 am this Saturday e flooding remains a concern.
“There may be heavy precipitation with amounts that can naturally cause this type of problems as occurred during the day, that is a possibility. Some instability lines continue to emerge from the south with these strong and organized showers that go in a narrow band towards to the south coast of the Algarve and then further north and inland”, explains Pedro Sousa from IPMA.
A line that is expected to move forward until Castelo Branco, Guarda and Viseu that stay in yellow warning until the end of this Friday.
