The North American newspaper fired its entire editorial board. The decision was taken by the newspaper’s owner, Patrick Soon-Shiong, just less than 1 month after banning the outlet from declaring support for Kamala Harris (Democrat) or Donald Trump (Republican) in the United States presidential race, by the Republican.
Soon-Shiong that a new editorial board will be hired by Los Angeles Times. He stated that the new plan is to make his vehicle more “fair” e “balanced”.
“I will work to make our newspaper and media fair and balanced so that all voices are heard and we can respectfully exchange the views of every American, left, right and center.”he declared.
The speech was made in reference to the criticism suffered by the North American newspaper after its decision for this year’s presidential election. Critics of Soon-Shiong say he put his newspaper’s reputation to the test.
Before dismissing the entire editorial team Los Angeles Timesemployees were already leaving the newspaper. Mariel Garza, head of the editorial board, stepped down on October 23 after the newspaper’s owner banned statements supporting candidates.
She said that her departure from the newspaper was a way of “make it clear” who does not agree with the decision. According to Mariel, the editorial board had already planned to declare support for Kamala Harris, but was blocked by the newspaper owner.
O Los Angeles Times has endorsed Democratic candidates in presidential elections since 2008, with Barack Obama. This year, Patrick Soon-Shing, a billionaire who bought the newspaper in 2018, banned the traditional statement of support made by the editorial board.
