Heating bills are getting higher and rumors of the end of the energy price cap are raising fears among consumers. They are looking for ways to cut costs, raising questions about whether or not to turn off the heating when leaving home or in rooms we don’t use.

The problem of home heating worries most Romanians, burdened by high bills. But there are ways to cut costs and keep your home comfortable.

How to heat unoccupied rooms

Instead of turning off the heating completely in rooms you don’t use, it’s a good idea to turn it down to a lower level. Otherwise the walls will cool the walls and other rooms will be colder, even if you set the radiators to maximum. Those rooms also run the risk of damp and mold. In addition, it’s a good idea to close doors and ventilate from time to time.

Also, if you have your own central heating system, turning off the radiators completely in certain areas of the house will cause problems in the heating circuit.

How to keep warm when you leave home

When it’s bitterly cold outside, we think leaving the central heating on at a low temperature all day will cut costs. The Energy Saving Trust says this would be a misconception. Every time the heating is on, some heat is lost through the walls and windows. The more heat you use, the more heat you lose. The Energy Saving Trust recommends that you set a time to turn the heating on shortly before you arrive home, so that your home is a pleasant temperature when you arrive.

If you’re connected to a central heating system you can set your radiators to a lower setting, otherwise you run the risk that when you get home you’ll find the house cold and it will take several hours to warm up.

What you do when you work from home

If you work from home, you’ll probably spend most of your time in one room. One solution may be to set your radiators to minimum and install an electric radiator in your office, not connected to your central heating system. Modern electric radiators have timers and can be connected to smart home systems so you only heat the room you use. But this will significantly increase your electricity costs.

One option would be to heat the room you work in more and set a lower temperature in the others.
