The Prime Minister of the Valencia region, Carlos Mazón of the People’s Party (PP), on Friday admitted mistakes in handling Spain’s deadliest floods in decades. TASR reports according to the AFP agency.
“I will not deny mistakes,” Mazón declared in front of the regional parliament, saying that he did not want to shirk responsibility. He therefore apologized to all those who felt that help during the floods “did not come or was not enough”. During his speech, dozens of protesters gathered outside the regional parliament, shouting and chanting slogans demanding his resignation.
At the end of October, heavy rains caused extensive flooding in Spain, claiming at least 224 lives. The region of Valencia was the most affected, from where they confirmed up to 216 victims.
The damage amounted to tens of billions of euros, while roads, infrastructure, houses and cars were destroyed. Many survivors in the region express anger against the authorities for not warning the population in time and for not providing urgent rescue and relief work. The situation came to a head earlier this month in the city of Paiporta, where mobs threw mud and other objects at King Felipe VI, Queen Letizia and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez. He promised help in the amount of several billion euros.
