University of Aveiro marks 50 years with time capsule, which will only be reopened in 2073

The University of Aveiro (UA) time capsule will only be reopened in its 100th anniversary, in 2073. Inside there are several elements, destined for future generations, which reflect the first 50 years of the academic institution’s existence.

It is next to the ‘Glossary’ – a commemorative totem measuring six meters and covered with 2500 tiles – that the time capsule is buried. These two symbols of the institution are located in Space 50, “a area dedicated to the AU jubileenext to the southwest entrance of the Santiago Campus”.

Its interior contains “a collection of elements carefully chosen by the academic community” that reflect the first 50 years existence of the institution. Among the various objects are audio messages from members of the University of Aveiro and several lettersincluding a message of the current rector Paulo Jorge Ferreira, whose recipient the person who will assume the same position50 years from now.

They are also copies of editions of Linhas magazine and newspaper Diário de Aveiroon November 13th this year, accompanied by a supplement marking the 50th anniversary of the academic institution. The objective is to leave future generationswhich are part of the University of Aveiro (UA), a record of what was “social and institutional context” experienced at this time.
