Group of Evangelos Marinakis, owner of Nottingham Forest, exchanges documents with Rio de Janeiro club for possible acquisition of controlling stake
Vasco da Gama began negotiations to sell its Football Corporation (SAF) to the group of Greek businessman Evangelos Marinakis. The parties exchange information and documents to evaluate the transaction, the newspaper The Globe on Thursday (14.Nov.2024).
Marinakis controls a network of clubs that includes Nottingham Forest, from England, Olympiacos, from Greece, and Rio Ave, from Portugal. The group shows interest in expanding its investments to the Brazilian market.
Brazilian businessmen with connections in Marinakis clubs conduct the negotiations. The recent hiring of executive Edu Gaspar, formerly of Arsenal, by the group reinforces the movement towards getting closer to the national market.
Vasco keeps other negotiation fronts open and plans to define the process by the beginning of 2025. Before that, it needs to resolve the dispute with A-CAP in arbitration by Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV).
The current manager of Vasco football, 777 Partners, invested 700 million reais for 70% of the club’s shares in 2022. The arbitration process with A-CAP, resumed last week, discusses the sale of the percentage that belonged to the company American.
