Artillery shell hits UN peacekeeping base: Officials call for security

Deliberate attacks on peacekeepers constitute a serious violation of international humanitarian law and UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” stated in the UNIFIL statement.

Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani called on Israel’s new foreign minister, Gideon Saar, to ensure the security of the peacekeepers. Saar promised an immediate investigation into the incident, the government in Rome said. In another incident on Friday morning, a French UN peacekeeper was killed in a traffic accident near the village of Šama passengers in a UNIFIL convoy. Three others suffered minor injuries.
