Meeting, which is held for the first time in Brazil; Embratur says that the event boosted the number of seats on flights by 42%
The city of Rio de Janeiro is already moving to host, for the first time, the summit meeting of G20 leaders. According to information from Embratur based on data from ForwardKeys, there was a 41% increase in the number of international flights to the capital of Rio de Janeiro, when compared to the same period last year, for the period from November 11th to 20th.
The growth went from 275 to 388 international flights. The countries that recorded the biggest increase were the United Arab Emirates (160%), Germany (133%) and the United States (128%).
The number of international seats also recorded practically the same growth. According to the survey, the increase is 42.2%, going from 61,939 to 88,088 international seats for Rio between November 11th and 20th, 2024. The record holders for the number of seats are Uruguay (191%), Spain (145%) and, again, the United States (127%).
The meeting, which is taking place for the first time in Brazil, this year brings together the 19 largest economies in the world to create proposals on topics of global interest. The official meeting will be on the 18th and 19th of November, but events such as the G20 Social, U20 and the Aliança Global Festival have already started.
A study by the Visit Rio Convention Bureau Foundation reveals that all events involving the G20 Summit will inject R$432.5 million into Rio’s economy. The expenses, according to the study, cover accommodation, food and transport.
The president of Embratur, Marcelo Freixo, highlighted the vocation of the capital of Rio de Janeiro and the State of Rio de Janeiro to host major events.
“The G-20 will be another demonstration of our experience in hosting major events, whether cultural, sports or international politics. It is an event that once again attracts the eyes of the world to our city. And whoever comes will leave talking well and will want to come back, which is good for the whole country. Rio is the main gateway to Brazil, it is our main postcard. When Rio does well, Brazil does well”declared Freixo.
The Visit Rio study also shows that there has been growth in Rio de Janeiro’s promotions sector from 2023 to 2024. This year, 414 events have been held so far, an increase of 28.17% compared to the 323 in 2023 The revenue generated grew significantly, exceeding R$6.42 billion, which represents an increase of 12.27% compared to 2023.
For Visit Rio’s executive president, Carlos Werneck, these numbers confirm Rio’s consolidated position as one of the main destinations for events in Brazil. According to him, the expectation is that the numbers will be even better from the G20 onwards.
“These results show the positive impact of the events sector on the local economy, strengthening the city as a business and entertainment hub. The expectation is that the G20 will further boost this visibility [do Rio] and contribute to an even more promising future”concluded.
