The president of , , warned this Friday (15) that the world is entering an era of growing “unilateralism” and “protectionism”, in a message released during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum () held in Lima. His warning is related to the concern generated by the threat of the president-elect of , , to punish Chinese exports to the country with a 60% tariff. “Xi warned about the spread of unilateralism and protectionism” and stated that “the fragmentation of the world economy is increasing”, indicates the written speech addressed to the APEC summit, cited by the Chinese state news agency Xinhua.

The Chinese president will meet this Saturday (16) in Lima with the president of the United States, for their last face-to-face meeting before Biden hands over power to Trump in January. In his statement, Xi also highlighted that the world had “entered a new period of turmoil and transformation,” according to Xinhua. In this sense, he asked that global production and supply chains remain “stable and fluid”.

Trump had already started a trade war with China during his first term. Xi added that any attempt to reduce global economic interdependence “is nothing more than a step backwards.” China, the second largest economy in the world, faces several challenges in consolidating its growth trajectory after the crisis caused by the pandemic.
