The far-right party Alternative for Germany () invited the US president-elect to address the European Parliament, in a letter obtained by the German news agency (dpa).
Such a speech by Trump would show a “strong commitment to breathe new life” into the EU-US relationship, the letter to European Parliament President Roberta Metzola, dated November 12, said.
The AfD, together with other far-right parties, form the Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN) group in the European Parliament.
The letter was signed by René Aust, AfD German MEP, and Polish MEP Stanisław Tiska, as ESN co-chairs. The letter was also signed by AfD MEP Christine Anderson, member of the ESN executive committee.
There has so far been no public reaction from the president of the European Parliament to the letter. Metsola’s team said it always considers all proposals from political groups in the European Parliament.
Metsola’s team also pointed out that there is already an open invitation to current US President Joe Biden.
In other political groups of the European Parliament, there is widespread concern about the election victory and the new term of Trump.
There are fears that the Trump administration could freeze military aid to Ukraine in its war against Russian aggression and force the country to negotiate and agree to sweeping concessions to Russia.
Economic relations between the European Union and the United States could also deteriorate again with Trump’s first term in office.
