The president of the opinion research institute Ipsos, in the United States, Clifford Young, in an interview with , spoke about the current political and social situation in the country.
According to Young, the challenges faced by American society are going through a time of intense political polarization and highlights how social networks and the media in general contribute to the formation and maintenance of divergent world views among American citizens.
“If you think about social networks as media in general, the United States and America today live in different bubbles and worlds, which have very different narratives,” he said.
America divided: blue x red
For Clifford Young, there are two predominant perspectives in the country. On the one hand, the “more democratic, bluer” one, which emphasizes the threats to democracy. On the other, the “redder, more republican”, which expresses distrust in the system and problems with the elites.
“You have the more democratic, bluer side, which sees the world in a certain way, which talked a lot about threats to democracy. And there are social networks and the media in general, more red, more republican, which sees the world a little differently. It’s a question of distrust in the system, problems with elites, etc.”
Young emphasized that this division has a significant impact on how Americans perceive the country’s political and social reality.
“This America today is divided and polarized, obviously, these worlds have had a huge impact on the perception of Americans,” he concluded.
