Country refused to sign document prepared by the G20 Empowerment Working Group
The first lady said that Argentina’s veto of the resolution does not prevent “to celebrate” the document produced and to make Argentine women feel represented by it.
“We know that there are different themes regarding women who face resistance: misogyny, gender equality, equal pay for men and women. The Empowerment GT managed to build consensus throughout the year and, to our surprise, on the penultimate day [de discussões]at the final ministerial meeting, Argentina blocked the resolution and did not sign it. But that doesn’t stop us from celebrating”, he declared in an interview with the news channel CNN Brazilshown on Saturday (16.Nov.2024). Read the resolution (PDF, in English – 279 kB).
According to Janja, “it is not a political decision by the Argentine government that will prevent” women in the country to feel represented. “People regret [o veto]but we know the importance of this group”, he declared, referring to the G20 Empowerment Working Group. She stated that the work will “stay strong” when South Africa assumes the G20 presidency on December 1.
Janja already had the Argentine government on Thursday (Nov 14), during the opening of the G20 Social. She said she can’t “conceive“think not future”no gender equality suits”. According to her, “unfortunately” the country governed by Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right-wing) refused to support the document because it included “gender equality”.
“Women’s voices need to be heard, and the Empowerment GT came out with a very strong, very powerful resolution. Unfortunately, we had a country, which was Argentina, which, for reasons, ultimately, did not sign the resolution because it stated, at the beginning of the resolution, gender equality. And for me, I cannot conceive that today we can think about the world from now on without having gender equality, where our voice is strong and powerful.”, declared Janja.
