US President announced US$50 million for the Amazon Fund and should talk to local leaders who work to preserve the forest
The President of the United States, Joe Biden (Democratic Party) arrived this Sunday (Nov 17, 2024), at around 1:40 pm, in Manaus (AM) to make his 1st visit to the Amazon. According to the White House, throughout his stay in the capital of Amazonas, Biden should meet with local leaders who work to preserve the forest.
Both the mayor of Manaus, (Avante), and the governor of Amazonas, (União Brasil), were at Eduardo Gomes airport awaiting the arrival of the delegation.
Earlier, the North American president announced the allocation of US$50 million to the Amazon Fund, which allocates resources to environmental preservation. The financial commitment is part of a larger promise, which aims to allocate a total of US$500 million to the preservation of the Amazon Forest over 5 years.
The amount announced by Biden now adds to another US$50 million that had already gone to the Fund during a meeting with the president (PT) in the USA, in 2023.
Biden came to Brazil to participate in the G20 Summit, which will be held on November 18 and 19, in Rio de Janeiro, and for a bilateral meeting with President Lula. He leaves for the capital of Rio de Janeiro at the end of this Sunday (Nov 17).
According to the United States government, this is the first time that a North American president will visit the Amazon during his term in office. In September, at the 79th UN General Assembly, Lula, the democrat, visited the Amazon. The White House described the trip as “historical”.
“The president will travel to Brazil and begin [a viagem] with a historic trip to the Amazon, to highlight your personal commitment and that of the USA, at all levels of government and throughout our private sector and civil society, to combat climate change”, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan told reporters. “This will be the first visit by a sitting US president to the Amazon.”he stated.
