In the final stretch of investigations targeting the former president (PL), at Palácio da Alvorada, he brought together authorities from the Republic who occupy key positions in defining these cases.

Wanted by Sheet through their advisors, ministers of the (Supreme Federal Court) and the heads of the (Attorney General’s Office), and the Federal Police, Andrei Rodrigues, did not want to answer what was the reason for the meeting or the content of the conversation.

The meeting began shortly before, an episode that once again mobilized the leadership of the Judiciary and the government against the attempted amnesty for the coup plotters.

Bolsonaro has already been indicted by the PF in some investigations, with a likely repetition of this outcome in relation to investigations into the crimes of attempted coup d’état and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, including the January 8 attacks.

In this case, it will be up to Gonet to file a complaint with the STF or not.

The authorities’ meeting on Wednesday was unrelated to the attack that night, but the attack reinforced the pressure on Bolsonaro in the face of the coup investigation.

The very next day, the STF minister sought to rule out the hypothesis of an isolated act in the explosions in Praça dos Três Poderes and to relate the case to the context that “began way back when the ‘hate office’ began to distill hate speech against the institutions, against the STF, mainly against the autonomy of the Judiciary”.

“Hate Cabinet” is the name given to the group of Bolsonaro’s close assistants who, according to PF investigations, had the objective of spreading false news and attacks on opponents during the former president’s administration.

Of the Supreme Court ministers, they were at Alvorada on Wednesday and, in addition to Moraes, who is precisely the rapporteur at the court of investigations into the coup acts.

According to Lula’s aides, he had already scheduled a conversation with members of the Judiciary for a “scenario assessment” meeting — something that, according to these reports, has been happening frequently.

In short, the meeting in Alvorada was hosted by Bolsonaro’s current political opponent (Lula) and was attended by the head of the corporation that commands the police investigations against him (Andrei), the person responsible for analyzing the conclusion of these investigations and decide whether to archive them or file a complaint with the Court (Gonet) and, finally, the judge responsible for the sentence (Moraes).

Despite the almost total absence of transparency and the potential risk of contamination of the necessary impartiality and separation of functions in a criminal process, informal and closed-door meetings between members of the top leadership of the STF, and other Powers have been common in recent years, in different presidential terms.

for example, then-president Michel Temer (MDB) went on a Saturday afternoon to a meeting not registered on his official agenda at the home of the then-president of the Chamber, Rodrigo Maia. Gilmar Mendes was also present at the meeting.

Temer and Gilmar had already met other times without official record in their diaries.

In August 2020, STF minister Dias Toffoli received then-president Bolsonaro at his home, on a Saturday night, as well as the then-president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (AP). At the time, he said that he had invited the agent to watch a Palmeiras game against Ceará.

In March 2021, on a Sunday. The meeting was also not placed on the president’s agenda and the subject of the conversation was not disclosed.

Bolsonaro also held several meetings during his administration with the then head of the PGR, Augusto Aras.

Last Wednesday, Gilmar was at Alvorada before the explosions in Brasília. Zanin left the Supreme Court after the end of the session, shortly after the incident. There was no precise information about the time of Moraes’ arrival at the meeting.

Declared ineligible by the (Superior Electoral Court) until 2030 for attacks and lies about the electoral system, Bolsonaro was indicted in 2024 in investigations into jewelry and the falsification of Covid vaccine certificates.

The investigations into the crimes of attempted coup d’état and violent abolition of the democratic rule of law will be concluded this November, according to the director general of the PF.

Part of these investigations is within the scope of, and, in theory, could result in Bolsonaro’s conviction on different fronts.

If he is prosecuted and convicted by the attempted abolition of the democratic rule of law and criminal association, the former president could take one and stay.
