Brazilian Fábio Azevedo was unanimously elected president of the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB), this Saturday, in Porto, Portugal. Azevedo was elected for the next eight years as the entity’s fifth president and succeeds Ary Graça Filho, who commanded the FIVB for 12 years.
“I am honored and grateful to have been elected to serve the global volleyball movement for the next eight years. Over the past 12 years, volleyball has seen remarkable growth, development and modernization around the world, and we have the opportunity to build foundations very strong”, said the new president, in a statement.
Former general director of the FIVB, Azevedo was a unique candidate. New Zealander Hugh McCutcheon assumes the role of general secretary. Ary Graça Filho received the title of honorary president of the FIVB.
The former president gave a speech and addressed Azevedo. “I am very proud of everything you have achieved so far. Today’s election is the result of your hard work, professionalism and great vision for our sport. It has been an honor and a pleasure to work with you for over 34 years.”
Cuban Mireya Luis Hernandez, one of the best players in history, was elected to the entity’s minority gender commission.
