Putin will not be able to be stopped by phone calls, which cannot replace the Western support provided to Ukraine defending against Russian aggression, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk declared on Sunday. TASR informs based on the reports of the agencies PAP and DPA.

The Polish Prime Minister’s statement is a reaction to the Friday conversation between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Scholz, in his own words, asked the Russian president to withdraw Russian troops and urged him to “negotiate with Ukraine to ensure a just and lasting peace.”

The step of the German chancellor earned a wave of criticism not only in Germany, but also abroad. Jürgen Hardt of the German Christian Democratic Party CDU/CSU called the phone call “a sign of weakness, not strength.”

“No one will stop Putin with phone calls. Last night’s attack, one of the biggest of the entire war, is proof that phone diplomacy cannot replace real support for Ukraine from the whole West. The following weeks will decide not only the war itself, but also our future,” said Tusk in English on the X social platform.

The Finnish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Elina Valtonenová, also described the phone calls as ineffective on Sunday. She called on the leaders of European countries to exercise restraint in negotiations with Moscow about the war in Ukraine. “The most important thing is to understand that this must not become a competition for the attention of the Kremlin,” she declared Valtonenova in an interview for German television ARD.
