Flamengo is preparing to write another great chapter in its history, the construction of the club’s stadium. Two months ago, the red-black board took possession of the Gasometer land, works should begin in May 2026.
Guest of CNN Esportes S/A this Sunday (17), Marcos Bodin, Flamengo’s vice-president of heritage, spoke about the club’s concession with Maracanã, and the future of the stadium after the construction of the new home.
“This concern (about Maracanã) is great, because it starts in five years. Today is not the time to be scared by this. Afterwards, we see Maracanã with at least all the Rio classics. You can have two fans at Maracanã coexisting during big games. The Cariocas were in the last three or four Libertadores finals. Several clubs hold shows. Maybe Maracanã will have space, because the number of games at Maracanã will decrease, so you will be able to look at this side of events”, said Bodin.
Maracanã Concession
In September this year, Flamengo and Fluminense signed the Maracanã concession, together with the Rio de Janeiro State Government. The Fla-Flu duo’s bid is valid for 20 years, with 65% from the red-blacks and 35% from the Rio tricolor. According to the director, despite the construction of the new stadium, Flamengo does not intend to give up the Maracanã administration.
“Flamengo will continue managing Maracanã for these 20 years and still has the possibility of five more. The management work that was done at Maracanã is fantastic. Maracanã today is positive, there is investment there, there is profit”, he stated
“Flamengo continues, they like Maracanã, they feel at home at Maracanã. Maracanã is ours and we will never give it up”, added Bodin
Use of Maracanã
Flamengo’s vice president of marketing shared plans for Maracanã once the new home is ready. According to him, the club will be able to play some matches at their old home.
“We have games against teams from Rio de Janeiro, the classics, there are games with the Brazilian team. There are also Fluminense games, which will all be at Maracanã. So there are already a very large number of games. There are the games that Flamengo plays, Campeonato Brasileiro, Libertadores, Copa do Brasil, there are many games that wear out the field. So we will be able to create a model where I play some games in our stadium, but I don’t need to play all the games in our stadium, I can play in our other stadium.
