Don’t get rid of potato skins unnecessarily! Not only do they contain valuable nutrients, but they also make excellent chips.
Potatoes are used not only as a frequent side dish to many dishes, but are also part of many meals. Whether you used them to make mashed potatoes, potato pancakes or dumplings, don’t throw the peeled skins in the trash! It would be an eternal shame. You can use them to easily make homemade crispy chips that no one can resist and they are ready in a few minutes.

A healthy salty snack
It would be a shame not to use the potato skins any further. You’ve probably already heard that the most nutrients and vitamins are just under the skin. It is an excellent source of fiber, which is beneficial not only for digestion, but also reduces the risk of heart disease, colon cancer and diabetes.
The skins also contain a significant dose of potassium, which supports proper metabolism, as well as iron, which is a great helper in the functioning of red blood cells. The skins also contain vitamin B3, useful antioxidants, phytoenzymes and phytonutrients.

“The skins are a great source of fiber and if they are from good quality potatoes, I have nothing against them. After all, at home we always prepare potatoes with the skin on,” says Margit Slimáková, a specialist in health prevention and nutrition.
The use of husks has its own rules
However, when using potato peels, it is important to remember that dishes should always be prepared from them before the potatoes start sprouting. “But they say that potatoes with their skins are eaten until Christmas.
Then they begin to sprout, which is no longer suitable for consumption. Therefore, do not use sprouted potatoes for chips. Chips should also be fried in good oil, for example rapeseed oil,” recommends chef Martin Štangl.
Homemade chips from potato skins
Chips from potato skins are prepared similarly to classic chips. You will need skins from 1 kg of potatoes, vegetable or olive oil, salt and, depending on your preference, other spices such as paprika, cumin or chili.
Always wash the potatoes carefully with a brush before peeling them. Then peel them with a scraper. In this case, it is not advisable to peel the potatoes with a knife, the skins would be unnecessarily thick. Then immerse them in a bowl of water and ice for about an hour, then drain and dry with a towel.

If you want to prepare them in a pan, fry them in hot oil until crispy and golden. Then take them out with a slotted ladle, drain the excess oil and place them on a paper towel for a while. Finally, salt them and you can serve

It is also possible to prepare potato chips from the skins in the oven. First, drizzle them with oil in a bowl, salt them, or coat them in your chosen spices, and then place them evenly on a baking sheet lined with baking paper. Place them in the oven and bake for 8 to 10 minutes, until lightly browned and properly crispy.
