Israeli attack hit a residential area in the Lebanese capital and left 3 injured; Mohammad Afif was a close advisor to the extremist group’s leadership
Israel killed Mohammad Afif, Hezbollah’s head of communications, in bombing Beirut this Sunday (17.Nov.2024). The attack hit the Ras al-Nabaa neighborhood, a central area of the Lebanese capital where displaced people from the south of the country were seeking refuge, security sources told
The bombing had no prior warning of evacuation, which is the Israeli Army’s usual procedure before operations in the region. The attack left 3 injured, in addition to the death of Afif, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reported.
Afif was a close advisor to Hassan Nasrallah, the Hezbollah leader killed in September in an Israeli attack. He ran the television channel Al-Manarlinked to the extremist group, before taking over as head of the communications department.
The target of the bombing was a building housing Ba’ath party offices. Ali Hijazi, party leader, told the broadcaster Al-Jadeed that Afif was there at the time of the attack. Rescue teams and ambulances rushed to the scene, while shots were fired to disperse the approaching crowd.
In his last public demonstration, on November 11, Afif stated that Hezbollah had enough weapons and supplies to sustain a “prolonged conflict” with Israel.
Israel has intensified actions against Hezbollah since September, with a ground operation in southern Lebanon and frequent bombings of Beirut, where the group’s command is located. The country has already eliminated other leaders of the organization in the Lebanese capital, including Nasrallah and his possible successor, Hashem Safieddine.
