England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are in for a snowy weekend, with heavy snowfall expected from Sunday (November 17) for 48 to 72 hours. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings.
Just a heads-up for drivers: you’ll have to stick to a new recommended speed limit from tomorrow. England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will be hit by heavy snowfall from Sunday (November 17) for 48 to 72 hours, with yellow weather warnings issued by the Met Office.
Simon Waye, a technical engineer at ATS Euromaster, suggests that all drivers traveling in snowy weather keep an eye on their speed. He went on to explain: “Over half (60%) of drivers don’t know the recommended driving distance in snow and ice.
“When the roads are icy, they’re more slippery than usual, so braking distances can be 10 times longer than on a dry road.” He suggested the following: Highways England says to slow down and keep 10 times the normal recommended gap between you and the car in front. They also suggest driving especially slowly around any bends.
He added, “It’s important to brake and accelerate smoothly, especially on ice, to reduce the chance of skidding.” Avoid sudden acceleration and slow down gradually using gear changes and light braking to indicate to cars behind you that you’re slowing down.
The RAC had this to say: “Make sure you leave extra time to clear snow from your car before you set off. Driving with snow on your car could result in you breaking the law.” It’s also important to de-ice your windshield, which is a key part of winter driving. Just a heads-up: These tips will help you keep your windshield clear.
“It’s also good to know how to demist your windscreen quickly. It’s a good idea to carry a lock de-icer too, so you can clear your locks. If they do get frozen, try warming the key or spraying de-icer or an oil-based lubricant into the lock. You should also factor in the following checks, as they’ll take time.”
