Chinese President Xi Jinping promised this Saturday (16) to work with the new government of United States President-elect Donald Trump, as he held his final talks with outgoing President Joe Biden on important conflicts, ranging from cybercrime to trade. , Taiwan and Russia.

Biden met with Xi at a hotel where the Chinese leader is staying, on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Lima, Peru, for their first talks in seven months.

“China’s goal of a stable, healthy and sustainable relationship between China and the US remains unchanged,” Xi said, acknowledging the “ups and downs” between the countries.

“China stands ready to work with the new US administration to maintain communication, expand cooperation and manage differences.”

Biden told Xi that while the two leaders did not always see eye to eye, their discussions were “frank” and “sincere.”

The talks take place two months before Trump takes office. He promised to adopt 60% across-the-board tariffs on U.S. imports of Chinese goods as part of an “America First” package of trade measures.

Beijing opposes these measures. The also plans to hire several hard-line voices on China for senior roles, including U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State and Rep. Mike Waltz as national security adviser.

Biden has sought to reduce tensions with China, but Washington is angered by a recent cyberattack linked to China that compromised the phone communications of U.S. government and presidential campaign officials, as well as concerned about increasing pressure from Beijing about Taiwan and Chinese support for Russia.

Xi, who arrived in Lima on Thursday, plans a week of diplomacy in Latin America that includes a revamped free trade deal with Peru, the opening of the massive deep-water port of Chancay and a state visit to Brazil’s capital next week. China also announced plans to host the APEC summit in 2026.
