Alentejo has the highest number of deaths in road accidents in Europe, per million inhabitants. Portugal is the sixth country with the worst record in terms of road deaths.
In 2022, there were, on average, 46 fatalities on roads per million inhabitants in Europe.
All regions of Portugal – except Greater Lisbon – remained above the European average.
The data, released by Eurostat and cited by (CM), details that Greater Lisbon recorded 33 deaths per million inhabitants. In turn, the North region registered 48, Madeira 52, the Azores 59, the Center 76, the Algarve 97 and the Alentejo 149.
As the morning newspaper says, Eurostat classifies as fatal accident cases people who die at the scene of the accident and those injured who end up dying within 30 days after the accident.
With an average of 60 deaths per one million inhabitants, Portugal was the sixth country in Europe with the worst record.
Only Latvia, Greece, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania leading the table of deaths, with 80 per one million inhabitants. At the other pole, Sweden appears with a rate of 20 deaths, followed by Denmark and Ireland.
Separating countries by region, Alentejo appears prominently in first place for fatal accidents. As detailed by the CM, the second and third regions with the most cases are in Greece: Notio Aigaio (131) and Ionia Nisia (127).
On the positive side, it stands out Åland, in Finland, which recorded no deaths in 2022. The capitals Stockholm (Sweden), Vienna (Austria) and Berlin (Germany) also stood out for their very low rates.
According to a report made by the National Road Safety Authority, this Sunday, Portugal shows an increasing trend in accidents road accidents in the last decade – with the number of accidents increasing by 22%, fatalities 3.4%seriously injured 26%.
