How to freeze yeast? Simple rules
The process of freezing yeast is not difficult, but it requires the application of several rules. With a little care, the product will not lose its fermenting properties. How to proceed step by step?
- Preparation of yeast: Use the freshest possible product for freezing. Ideally, do this immediately after buying it, when you have separated the part you need for the current kitchen work. Divide the yeast into parts corresponding to the amount you usually use for baking (e.g. 10-20 g). This will make it easier to defrost exactly the amount you need.
- Packaging: Wrap them tightly to prevent them from drying out and absorbing freezer odors. You can use food film, bags or containers designed for freezing food.
- Designation: Write the freezing date on the package. Frozen yeast is suitable for six months.
- Freezing: Store the split yeast at a temperature of -18 °C. Place them in a place where they will not be exposed to frequent temperature changes. It is not a good idea to place them next to the freezer door.
How to thaw yeast?

- Avoid high temperatures and do not defrost yeast in the microwave. Very high temperatures reduce their properties. In order for the yeast to retain its properties, thawing must also be done correctly. It is best to choose a slow process.
- Place the yeast in the refrigerator for a few hours or preferably overnight before you plan to work in the kitchen.
- If you want to speed up the process, you can put the yeast in a deep bowl and cover it with warm, but not hot, milk or water.
