In an interview with Poder360, the governor of Pará said that environmental impacts do not ask whether someone is a Democrat or Republican

The governor of Pará, (MDB), said this Sunday (17.Nov.2024) that climate tragedies and their impacts have no ideology. In an exclusive interview with Poder360he said he hopes that the President of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican), will be at COP30, the UN (United Nations) summit on climate change, in Belém, next year.

“We have to strive for dialogue. It is essential that we understand that environmental emergencies are not ideological, they are part of our lives, everyone’s lives. The environmental impacts, the impacts that people are experiencing. You don’t ask if they are Democrats, if they are Republicans, if they are progressive, if they are conservative. Knock on everyone’s door”said Barbalho after participating in an event by the NGO Global Citizen in Rio.

He cited the tragedy of the floods in Rio Grande do Sul as an example, saying that no one asked whether the people affected were right-wing or left-wing.

In Rio Grande do Sul, we have hundreds of Brazilians who lost their lives. No one asked if he was right-wing or left-wing. Therefore, we have to have this understanding that it is time for us to prioritize dialogue so that, with this, we can reduce what separates us and point out what is fundamental”he stated.

Regarding the elected president of the USA, Helder says he will prioritize dialogue. “Os The United States, as the main power on the planet, must participate [da COP30]. We must dialogue so that there is either the presence of the American government, or the presence of science, be it the presence of the private sector to strengthen, on the one hand, climate financing, but also, on the other, to have a commitment to the environment, to the American territory, of energy transitions to reduce emissions”he stated.

Trump and the environment

The president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump (Republican Party), on Monday (11.nov) former congressman Lee Zeldin as head of the US Environmental Protection Agency – equivalent to the (Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Natural Resources Renewables) in Brazil. According to Trump, at the head of the body, the former congressman will deregulate the sector and maintain “altos” environmental standards.

“I have known Lee Zeldin for a long time and have seen him deal brilliantly with some extremely difficult and complex situations. I am very proud to have him in the Trump administration, where he will quickly prove to be a major contributor.”Trump said in a statement.

Environmentalist policy proposals were rejected by Trump during his 2024 presidential campaign. The Republican supports unlimited production of fossil fuels, says he will withdraw the country again from the Paris Agreement and says he will revoke investment in clean energy and the fight against climate change instituted by President Joe Biden (Democrat).

The president-elect says his goal is for the US to have the cheapest energy and electricity in the world. During his first term, Trump repealed more than 100 environmental regulations, including legislation aimed at reducing emissions that cause global warming and to protect rivers, oceans and air quality.
