During these Monday (18) and Tuesday (19), Santos Dumont Airport, in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, has flights suspended for the G20 Leaders Summit.
The interruption of air operations was a request from Eduardo Paes (PSD), mayor of Rio de Janeiro, due to mobility restrictions in the vicinity of the Museum of Modern Art (MAM), the event’s headquarters, which is located approximately 500 meters from the airport.
Jacarepaguá Airport will also operate with restrictions established by the Department of Airspace Control (DECEA) between Sunday (17) and Wednesday (20).
During this period, only Azul Conecta operations and flights aimed at offshore operations will be maintained. Jacarepaguá has daily Azul Conecta flights to Congonhas (São Paulo), Viracopos (Campinas) and Confins (Belo Horizonte).
With , the option for those who want to land in the capital of Rio de Janeiro is Tom Jobim International Airport (RIOgaleão).
RIOgaleão must absorb the flights scheduled for Santos Dumont before the announcement of its closure last Friday (8) by the Ministry of Ports and Airports and the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac).
The redirection of flights must occur according to the airlines’ operational guidelines and the airport’s operational capacity. The forecast is that, between November 14th and 20th, RIOgaleão will receive 326 thousand passengers — 68% more than in the same period in 2023.
RIOgaleão airport expects to receive around 2,000 flights during this period, almost 90% more than in the same period last year. In a statement, the concessionaire informed that it had renovated the space to receive delegations, reinforced the cleaning and maintenance teams, in addition to requesting an extra fleet of taxis and app cars during the event period.
In a note, PAX Aeroportos, Jacarepaguá’s airport administrator, states that it does not interfere in the analysis and approval of flight plans, nor in airspace restrictions, which is an exclusive responsibility of DECEA.
