The expectation is that the G20 will advance in agreements focused on nature preservation, sustainability, reducing hunger and poverty, in addition to reducing social inequality. The 2030 Agenda, which has received global consensus, is seen as a clear path to tackling inequalities and injustices, says Guterres. The UN Secretary-General asked countries to demonstrate a spirit of consensus and common sense, making the meeting a success with decisions relevant to the international order. He highlighted that the division of the G20 would be undesirable in a world already marked by geopolitical divisions.

Furthermore, Guterres addressed the need to reinforce multilateralism and reform the UN Security Council in relation to Trump’s victory, which, according to him, no longer represents the current geopolitical context. He suggested the inclusion of new countries, especially from the global south, and a review of the Council’s working methods to make it more effective. On Saturday, Guterres met with President Lula, who asked for support for the continuity of the G20 Social, a Brazilian initiative. The G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro begins this Monday at the Museum of Modern Art.
