A waterspout formed in the Ponta do Sol square, in Madeira, around 11:50 am last Sunday, surprising everyone who witnessed the phenomenon. Several videos of the moment were quickly shared on social media, showing this natural spectacle that lasted a few minutes.
Meteorologist Victor Prior, speaking to the newspaper Diário da Madeira, explained that this is an “unfrequent” phenomenon in the region, although it is not unprecedented.
The waterspout results from a movement of “rotating upward air” which, when rising, causes water vapor to condense, forming a visible funnel.
