Is it renovated? This news could change your plans for 2025

Those who are retired always hope to see their pension increased. If you were already making plans for next year, hoping to save more money at the end of each month, know that the Minister of Finance stated last week that it was not yet time to make an extraordinary increase in pensions. Thus, the Government’s intention to repeat the granting of a supplement in 2025 falls to the ground.

“For the sake of precaution, for the sake of caution, for the sake of not rigidity in public spending, not creating more permanent and structural expenditure that will last for many years, we understand that it is not yet the time to make this extraordinary increase [das pensões]”, said Finance Minister Miranda Sarmento.

He states that the Minister of Finance took this position in response to questions from the PS deputy, António Mendonça Mendes, when he sought to understand why the Government did not agree with the pension increase proposed by the socialists. However, the Government foresees a new support measure for retirees, which is “only dependent on the fiscal situation”.

Miranda Sarmento says that the Government would like to repeat in 2025 a measure similar to the payment of a supplement between 100 and 200 euros, like the one carried out in October, for pensions up to 3 Social Support Indexes (IAS).

It is worth mentioning that one of the PS’s proposals was to structurally and permanently update the smallest pensions (up to three Social Support Indexes, that is, 1,527.78 euros taking into account the 2024 IAS) by 1.25 percentage points, above from the regular January update. According to the leader of the PS parliamentary committee, Alexandra Leitão, this pension measure would cost 265 million euros.
