President of Argentina participates in leaders’ summit and is expected to meet Lula for the first time
The president of Argentina, Javier Milei (La Libertad Avanza, right) arrived in Rio this Sunday (17.Nov.2024) to participate in the G20.
He will participate in the leaders’ summit that starts on Monday (Nov 18). The libertarian is expected to participate in the plenary of heads of state, in addition to the reception in the afternoon.
Before traveling to Brazil, according to newspapers and , at the beginning of October, Milei sent a letter to the president (PT) stating that he was willing to “contribute with the Brazilian presidency to the success of the meeting”.
The Argentine leader should seek to promote the signing of the free trade agreement between Mercosur and the EU (European Union) at the meeting. In September, if the European bloc was prepared, the signing of the treaty could be done during the summit.
Since 1999, Brazil has been trying to establish an agreement between the blocs, which establishes a reduction in the collection of taxes on imports of goods and services.
The agreement was signed in 2019, during the (PL) government, but did not undergo review by the countries’ parliamentarians to enter into force.
In 2023, when Lula resumed government, because of the EU’s new environmental requirements.
MILEI AND LULA
It will be the first time that the Argentine and Brazilian presidents will meet. The relationship between the two has been marked by exchanges of barbs and insults since the period of the Argentine electoral campaign in 2023.
Milei is already someone “with a totalitarian vocation”. The PT member, in turn, compared the libertarian to Bolsonaro by stating that the two act “against the system” political.
Lula did not attend the Argentine leader’s inauguration, in December 2023. He sent the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, to represent the country during the ceremony.
