The tone of criticism increased in a movement that has as its backdrop the dispute for right-wing voters in the state in 2026.
National president of Novo, Eduardo Ribeiro says that Mello’s administration adopts “populist and electoral” measures. “We do not see a reformist agenda, which seeks to leave a legacy. On the contrary, we see attitudes thinking only of short-term political benefits”, says Ribeiro.
He cites the government’s decision to reverse a state pension reform. “Not even PT governors did this.”
Other examples mentioned are the Mello administration’s defense of changes to the legal framework for sanitation, one of the liberal agendas approved by Jair Bolsonaro’s government, and a program for scholarships at community universities.
More serious, says the director of Novo, are accusations that accumulate of irregularities in hiring without bidding. “The issue of suitability for us is something very expensive,” he says.

According to Ribeiro, he could be an alternative to the dispute for the government of Santa Catarina in 2026, with Mello as his likely opponent, who should seek re-election.
“I don’t see the possibility of us walking together with the governor in 2026”, says the party leader. He also mentions , as a possible candidate that Novo could support against the current governor.
