In a recent statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled the president’s warnings Vladimir Putin about the possible repercussions of allowing Ukraine to use long-range weapons in attacks against Russian territory. This statement came after reports that the United States had authorized kyiv to use long-range missiles.
The spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, María Zajárova declared to the RBC portal that “the president has already spoken on the matter”referring to statements by Putin on September 13. On that occasion, the Russian leader stated that authorizing attacks inside Russia with long-range missiles would change the “essence” and “nature” of the conflict in Ukraine. Putin stressed that such a measure would imply that NATO countries, the United States and European states would be fighting directly against Russia.
Last Sunday, American media reported that the president Joe Biden had given Ukraine the green light to use long-range weapons in limited attacks inside Russia. However, so far, neither the White House nor the Pentagon have officially confirmed this authorization. According to The Washington Post, The weapons in question are ATACMS supersonic guided missiles, capable of carrying conventional or cluster warheads and with a range of approximately 300 kilometers.
If this decision is confirmed, it would represent significant support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia, just before the Biden government is succeeded by Donald Trump’s in January. Trump has repeatedly promised to end the war in Ukraine, adding an additional layer of uncertainty to the situation.
