The European Commission sent another invoice to the Hungarian government, in this case to 60 million euros. The European Union is currently demanding 353 million euros from the government led by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, because Hungary has not fulfilled the court decision in the area of asylum policy. Referring to the hvg.hu server, the correspondent of TASR in Budapest informs about it.
Hungary had until October 31, 2024 to pay a fine worth 200 million euros and another 93 million euros for each day of delay. The current call for the payment of 60 million euros corresponds to the penalty for further delay until November 14.
EC spokesman Balázs Ujvári told the nepszava.hu server at a regular press conference on Monday that the owed amount of 293 million euros is already enforceable, which means that the EU can deduct it from any financial package intended for Hungary. The Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) fined Hungary in June because the Hungarian government in 2020 did not implement a decision on compliance with international procedures for asylum seekers.
“Hungary will receive a one-time fine of 200 million plus one million euros per day for not letting in illegal migrants. The decision is outrageous and unacceptable. We will not give in to the financial blackmail of Brussels bureaucrats! We will protect the borders and protect the Hungarian people,” responded the Prime Minister of Hungary at the beginning of September.
