The sanctions also target vessels and ports used to transport drones and missiles.
At Monday’s meeting in Brussels, EU foreign ministers extended sanctions against Iran for its support of Russia in the war against Ukraine. TASR informs about it according to the report of the AFP agency.
The European Union has also banned the export, transfer, supply or sale of components used in the production of missiles and drones from the EU to Iran. Transactions with ports “owned, operated or controlled” by sanctioned persons and entities are also prohibited.
“This measure includes access to port and lock facilities such as Amirabad and Anzali (in the Caspian Sea, note TASR) and the provision of any services to vessels,” EU ministers said in a joint statement. The sanctions also apply to the state-owned shipping company IRISL, its director and three Russian shipping companies accused of transporting weapons across the Caspian Sea.
Iran denies the accusations
Brussels has previously imposed sanctions on Iranian officials and entities it accused of aiding Russia in its military campaign in Ukraine. Iran denies accusations that it has provided Russia with missiles or drones in its war against Kiev.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi wrote on the X Network on Sunday that the EU is using a “non-existent pretext with missiles” to target its sea lanes.
Britain also announced sanctions against Iran on Monday. The State Department said it had frozen the assets of Iranian air and shipping carriers for transporting ballistic missiles and military supplies to Russia for use in Ukraine.
