A man was discharged due to abandonment for not responding to several calls, but ended up found lifeless in the emergency room of the Hospitals da Universidade de Coimbra (HUC), after waiting more than 10 hours.
The executive director of the National Health Service (SNS) confirmed this Tuesday the opening of an investigation into the case of the man found dead in the emergency room of the University of Coimbra Hospitals (HUC), revealed on Saturday.
“Before we know that it was a failure, we need to know what happened and an investigation was opened to understand what happened”, he said Antônio Gandra d’Almeida.
“We always have to know the things that went less well, [se há] room for improvement, but we need to understand exactly what happened”, he added.
As revealed on Saturday, the man was found dead in the emergency room of the University of Coimbra Hospitals on November 10, after more than 10 hours waiting.
The victim, who felt unwell after eating mushrooms that he had collected, went to the Tábua Health Center on November 9, and was transferred in the early afternoon of that day to Coimbra, where he waited hours for care.
The family, who intend to file a complaint, were informed that the man had a call discharge due to abandonment due to not responding to several callsbut the patient turned out to be found lifeless in the emergency room around 5:30 am the next day, the 10th.
Today, the executive director of the SNS highlighted that “things that go less well must be avoided”.
“When there are thousands of emergency room visits every day and they go very well, Maybe we should look more into what goes well and try to resolve when there are things that go less well”, he added.
