The decision that culminated in the “Countercoup” operation, launched this Tuesday (19) by the Federal Police over an alleged attempted coup d’état with evidence of monitoring for the death of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), vice president, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) and the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexandre de Moraes, were initially identified “based on the analysis of data stored on Mauro César Barbosa Cid’s cell phone, in particular by identifying messages shared between the aforementioned investigated and Marcelo Câmara”. Mauro Cid’s defense denies that he has any relationship or knowledge of the acts. The report attempts to contact those involved.
The decision that culminated in the operation places former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) at the scene of a possible coup act regarding the preparation and review of the supposed “coup draft”.
The police investigation highlighted the chronology of the criminal acts, according to the PF, indicating:
- Analysis and changes made by the then President of the Republic Jair Messias Bolsonaro in the so-called “coup draft”;
- Meeting between then-president Jair Messias Bolsonaro and the commander of Coter, General Estevam Cals Theofilo, on 12/9/2022, with the purpose of consummating the aforementioned coup;
- Exchange of messages between Mauro César Barbosa Cid and Marcelo Câmara indicating that they were accompanying and monitoring a Supreme Court minister;
- The analysis and changes made by the then President of the Republic Jair Messias Bolsonaro in the so-called “coup draft”.
According to the decision that culminated in the operation, these facts were highlighted by the Federal Police in investigations, generating “prevention for distribution […] in which it was found that messages sent by Mauro Cid to General Freire Gomes, then Commander of the Army, signaled that then President Jair Messias Bolsonaro was drafting and adjusting the draft of the illegal coup Decree and already seeking the support of General Estevam Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira, everything shows that enforcement actions for a coup d’état were underway.”
According to the document, the PF “points out the existence of records that General Estevam Theophilo Gaspar de Oliveira was at the Palácio do Planalto on 12/9/2022”.
