The mansion of former footballer Gerard Piqué, located in the Cerdanha region, in the Pyrenees, was the target of vandalism last Sunday, November 17th. The act was carried out by young people from the Arran organization, a group associated with the extreme left, who released a video on social media.
In the video, it is possible to see one of the young people vandalizing the property, while the distorted voice of another member denounces the housing crisis affecting Cerdanha. The group accuses “the rich, businessmen, politicians and speculators” of being responsible for the “tourist monoculture” which, according to them, suffocates the region and forces local inhabitants to leave due to high housing costs.
“We make it clear that the chic people of Barcelona, who come to have fun on the ski slopes or in their luxurious homes, have no place here. They are to blame for the precariousness of local inhabitants, who work long hours for low wages to serve them,” the group stated in the video.
The Arran organization reinforced that it will go “to the last consequences” in the fight for “a life that deserves to be lived”, taking a stand against luxury tourism and the social inequalities that they say are destroying the Pyrenees.
This protest sparked debate on social media, dividing opinions about the group’s methods and message. The incident again raises questions about the housing crisis and the impact of tourism on local communities.
