Poles love adding maggi to Sunday broth or gravy. Sometimes the product only enhances the aroma of dishes, and sometimes it saves when dishes lack flavor. Unfortunately, it turns out that today’s maggi may not be the best choice.
Maggi is international liquid seasoningwhose name comes from the originator of the product, i.e Juliusa Maggi. The Swiss is also the creator of the first powdered soups and vegetable stock cubes. In 1886, he founded a factory and introduced Maggi-Würze (“Maggi spice”). A year later, the product was registered in Germany.
Maggi is sold in a glass, angular bottle with a red and yellow label. Its marketing colors were developed by the spice’s originator. Maggi looks and tastes like soy sauce – it is dark in color and pleasant, slightly salty and “meat” aroma (umami). It is most often added to soups, sauces and meats to enrich or improve their taste.
The original composition of the Swiss flavoring product was almost 100%. natural. Its basis was lovage extract. Unfortunately, nowadays Maggi also contains artificial substances, so its regular use is not recommended.
What is maggi made of? Today, the spice is made not only from lovage extract, but also from… water, salt, monosodium glutamate (E621), disodium 5′-ribonucleotides (E635), glucose, yeast extract and flavors.
Maggi contains a large portion of saltwhich promotes an increase in pressure. Frequently adding spices to dishes it can even lead to hypertension. The additives used – E621 and E635 – may also cause harmful side effects. Large portions of monosodium glutamate that accumulate in the body cause sweating, hormonal disorders and hyperactivity (especially in the youngest). They can too promote weight gainand, consequently, obesity. The second component – disodium ribonucleotide – it can cause skin lesions, exacerbate asthma symptoms and cause mood swings.
Although occasional use of Maggi will not significantly affect your health, regular use in the kitchen is no longer advisable. So what can you replace maggi with? It is worth trying different spice mixtures or creating a natural mixture based on dried vegetables. Just grind the vegetables with your favorite herbs and mushrooms. This addition will add flavor or enhance the aroma of any dish.
