Guardrails should not be replaced around the National Congress after last week’s attack.
At least, this is not the desire of the president of Congress and the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
The images had been placed around the Congress Palace, on the Esplanada dos Ministérios, after those of January 8, 2023 and were .
The assessment is that Brazil does not have a history of frequent attacks and that Congress must continue to be seen as a place that represents the population, including for the appreciation of tourists.
Restrictions
On the other hand, Congress is considering restricting the general public’s access to the hat shop – the main entrance to the Chamber and the Senate.
Currently, access to the cloakroom, which is located under the Congress ramp and beneath some of the most important Parliament halls, is free for cars and pedestrians.
There are entrances at the site where visitors need to identify themselves and go through metal detectors. The space is one of the most used by parliamentarians and advisors on a daily basis.
The idea of restricting access is not new, but it was discussed again behind the scenes after the attack on the Chamber and in front of the Federal Supreme Court (STF), in Praça dos Três Poderes.
Checkpoint
Congress is considering placing a type of checkpoint before the access route to the cloakroom so that only authorities, advisors and employees can use the space. Even so, more studies are needed, such as logistics and the impact on traffic in the region and in the annexes, which would receive more visitors.
This Monday (18), Congress representatives met with the president of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Institute (Iphan), Leandro Grass, in the Senate.
Upon leaving, Grass said that Congress is currently studying to strengthen the security of the Chamber and Senate.
The intention of the participants is also to form a group with Congress and the government of the Federal District for other complementary actions in the medium term that may involve some type of structure or change of track.
