In Georgia, parliamentary elections were held on October 26 and were accompanied by accusations of electoral fraud and Russian interference.

Georgian President Salome Zourabishvili on Tuesday petitioned the Constitutional Court to annul the results of recent parliamentary elections, which the pro-Western opposition refuses to recognize and considers rigged. Her legal representative Eka Beseliová informed about it, writes TASR according to the report of the AFP agency.

In Georgia, parliamentary elections were held on October 26 and were accompanied by accusations of electoral fraud and Russian interference. The Georgian Election Commission confirmed the results of the mentioned elections on Saturday. According to them, the pro-Russian Georgian Dream won 53.93 percent of the votes, the four opposition alliances 37.79 percent.

According to the lawyer representing Zurabishvili in court, the initiative is related to “extensive violations of the principles of generality and secrecy of voting”.

The president took this step during ongoing protests against the election results. Demonstrators demanding their repetition already set up their tents on the main street in the capital Tbilisi on Monday, where they want to stay until further notice.

On Tuesday, their protest was dispersed by the police, who, according to the media, used force against the demonstrators – several demonstrators and at least one journalist were beaten and detained. Demonstrations in other places in Tbilisi continued on Tuesday morning, the DPA agency added.

Both the European Union and the United States have previously called for an investigation into alleged election irregularities. The opposition also refuses to sit in the newly elected parliament, which they consider illegitimate, as the elections were, according to them, accompanied by extensive fraud. Zurabishvili herself also spoke about Russian interventions. Moscow rejects these accusations. The president is also calling for an international investigation.
